Nordic Walking in the world

The spread of Nordic walking the world is attributable to Aki Karihtala

The international Nordic walking Federation (INWA) was established in 2000, and the first scientific research on Nordic Walking was done in the Cooper Institute.
The International Council on Nordic Walking (ICNW) was created in 2016 as a reaction to the need of healthy movement based on scientific research.
The World Modern Northern Walking Academy (WMNWA) was established in 2016 as a training centre of ICNW focusing on the current knowledge of the human body biomechanics.
Various activities, workshops, events, tours, symposia etc. are an indispensable part of the development of Nordic Walking. In the recent years, several new forms of Nordic Walking have been emerging, as for instance “Winter Nordic Walking” –nordic walking with snowshoes, or “Beach Nordic Walking” – nordic walking in water on the beach of a see or a lake. The number of practicing “nordic walkers” is steadily growing.
